eservist make up
roughly half the
strength of the
Defence Forces and like their
permanent counterparts are
volunteers. However, they
are part-time and only have a
limited amount of man days
in the year. To get an idea of
life with a typical Reserve
unit we recently spent some
time with 34 Res Inf Bn,
whose summer activities
included a training camp on
Bere Island, a presidential
guard of honour in Bantry,
and involvement with 1 Bde���s
tactical assessment in the
Glen of Imaal.
