The Government appointed the
Commission on the Defence
Forces on 15 December 2020
with the Terms of Reference
and membership as set out in
Appendix 1 of the report. The
Commission has focussed
its work throughout the past
13 months on considering
the appropriate capabilities,
structures and staffing of both
the Permanent Defence Force
(PDF) and Reserve Defence
Force (RDF) with a view to
the immediate future, and the
uncertain period beyond 2030.
Minister for Defence, Mr. Simon
Coveney T.D., welcomed the
publication of the report of the
Commission on the Defence
Forces. The Commission
was established on foot of a
commitment in the Programme
for Government and Government
decision in December 2020 which
also agreed its terms of reference
and membership.
