25 HANDOVER CEREMONY OF FINNER CAMP address the crowd, speaking of the history of the camp and the significance of the day. 28 Inf Bn chaplain Fr Gerry Carroll then led the ceremony in prayer, blessing the square and parade. After this GOC 2 Bde Brigadier General Tony Cudmore was invited to plant a native Irish Oak beside the monument to deceased members, marking another 100 years of continued service in Finner Camp. After this, former officer commanding 28 Inf Bn Col Declan O'Carroll was invited to the stand and read the poem The Cure at Troy by Seamus Heaney. Brigadier General Cudmore was then invited to lay a wreath in commemoration of all deceased members who have hailed from Finner Camp. A guard of honour led by 2/Lt Michael Kilcoyne, formed around the monument and carried out a funeral drill and a minute's silence in respect of those passed. After this, the honour guard marched from the commemoration monument to the flag pole and formed two ranks mirroring the parade carried out by their counterparts a century before. The honour guard awaited Captain Trevor Gethins to march forward and raise the flag. The raising of the flag and salute with the national anthem, again recreated the actions carried out by the Volunteers who took over from the British Forces in 1922. On conclusion of the ceremony, the battalion conducted a march past the guests and off the square. On the day, invited guests included local council representatives, Defence Forces Veterans, families of serving and retired members, former unit commanders and local media. Guests were invited to the battalion canteen for food and refreshments followed by the historical weapons and equipment display and an audio- visual presentation in the Battalion Gymnasium. Special thanks go out to Donegal County Museum Staff, Comdt Eugene McCusker (retd) and Col Declan O'Carroll (retd) for assistance in making the display an outstanding educational opportunity for all. On the day, over 150 soldiers were on parade and almost 300 guests and VIPs attended the historical occasion.
