On arrival on to the square, GOC 1 Bde Brig
Gen Brian Cleary gave an opening address
welcoming all to the barracks to share in this
commemoration.
Minister Coveney spoke of how it was a
proud moment for him to be speaking at the
event, noting the "extraordinary role" played
by the Defence Forces in UN Peacekeeping
missions around the world.
A wreath was laid by OC 1 Bde Artillery
Regiment and Collins Barracks in memory
of serving members past and present.
The ceremonial portion of the day was
concluded with an Air Corps Flypast
consisting of two PC12 aircraft.
As the troops marched off parade, the
occasion continued with an open day, where
units based in Collins Barracks demonstrated
their equipment and vehicles to friends,
family, and all interested. This proved a great
opportunity for the people of Cork City to "get
a look behind the walls" of the barracks and
gain an appreciation of what soldiers based
there do. In addition to the modern vehicles
and equipment put on show, Sliabh na mBán
and a host of other vintage vehicles were on
display on the main square.
Sgt Denis McGarry and his dedicated team
of volunteers also invited the visitors into
Collins Barracks Museum, where a large
collection of War of Independence and
Civil War artefacts are on display. He also
presented a number of items belonging
to General Michael Collins, including a
notebook that he carried on the day he
was killed in the Béal na Bláth ambush. He
stressed to each visitor that the museum
was open to the public, and all were welcome
to visit and learn about the barracks and its
connection to the War of Independence and
Civil War period in Cork.
