www.military.ie THE DEFENCE FORCES MAGAZINE | 23 Tpr Brian Kennedy (1 ACS) continued his impressive form on the international stage. A technically sharp and physically dominant fighter, he secured two convincing victories early in the week before delivering a commanding performance in the final. Using excellent ring craft and conditioning, Kennedy controlled the bout from start to finish to secure a clear win on points against a strong French opponent. Cpl Jamie Long, the team captain, brought all of his experience to bear in the final, where he outclassed a tough Tunisian opponent. His composure, sharp footwork, and precise counter-punching were the defining features of his performance helping to round off a brilliant day for the team. Private TJ King produced a brave and highly skilled performance against a technically awkward German opponent. Despite pushing the contest to the final bell and displaying tremendous ring intelligence, he was narrowly defeated on a split decision a result that could easily have gone either way. Similarly, Private Shauna Kearney demonstrated resilience, determination, and impressive technical ability in her bout against an experienced Dutch boxer. In what was one of the most competitive fights of the tournament, she left everything in the ring, ultimately losing out on another very close split decision. Pte Matthew Doev made his international debut at the tournament and he was very unlucky to pick up a cut against his Dutch opponent, with the fight being stopped in the second round. Pte Doev is an exciting prospect and I have no doubt he will return a better boxer after the experience. These results, while bittersweet, highlight the quality and depth of the team. With each boxer represented the Defence Forces with distinction. A TEAM EFFORT – LEADERSHIP, COACHING & FUTURE ASPIRATIONS Behind every great team is a group of dedicated individuals who guide, support, and develop talent. Head Coach Sgt John Molloy deserves special recognition for his unwavering commitment to Defence Forces Boxing. His years of service, technical knowledge, and ability to inspire athletes have been central to the team's development and ongoing success. Sgt Molloy's leadership continues to shape the team's culture, focusing not only on winning bouts but on developing complete athletes and exemplary Defence Forces representatives. Supporting him are Pte Ross Hickey whose experience as a high- performance athlete and coach adds a sharp competitive edge and Sgt Stephen Kelly, whose technical insights and availability to assist boxers at every level have made him an indispensable asset. CS Tommy Sheahan has also played a key role in mentoring and developing boxers, offering a wealth of experience and helping to ensure continuity in the coaching team. Comdt Grattan O'Hagan served as Chef De Mission for the tournament in France, handling logistics and operations with exceptional efficiency and professionalism. His role was instrumental in ensuring that the boxers and coaches could focus fully on their preparation and performance. The Defence Forces Boxing Team also continues to look ahead. Two of its members, Pte Sean Mari (7th Infantry Battalion) and Tpr Brian Kennedy (1 ACS), are currently in contention for selection to this year's World Championships – an exciting prospect that highlights the level of talent within the Team. MORE THAN MEDALS – BOXING AS A CATALYST The success of the Defence Forces Boxing Team extends beyond the ring. Boxing has proven to be a powerful tool for recruitment, retention, and engagement within the Defence Forces. The programme promotes discipline, fitness, and resilience, core qualities that mirror the demands of military life. It gives members an opportunity to excel individually while representing something greater than themselves. Moreover, the international exposure, high-performance training, and strong team culture are having a tangible impact on morale and cohesion. Young members of the Defence Forces see boxing not only as a sport but as a pathway to challenge themselves and represent their country in a unique way. The visibility of the team and their conduct at international events serves as a powerful symbol of what the Defence Forces stands for. Looking ahead, the annual Defence Forces Boxing Championships will take place in Cathal Brugha Barracks from the 14th to the 17th of July 2025. This event remains a key date in the sporting calendar and a crucial opportunity to identify the next generation of elite boxers who will carry the flag forward. A WORD OF THANKS None of this success would be possible without the ongoing support from across the organisation. The Defence Forces community continues to back the boxing team in every sense providing resources, encouragement, and recognition. A special word of thanks is extended to Comdt Sarah O'Regan of the Defence Forces Fitness & Sports Policy Section ( J7), whose commitment to sport and physical development has helped shape a sustainable and high-performance environment for all Defence Forces athletes.
