www.military.ie THE DEFENCE FORCES MAGAZINE | 9 A Focused Irish Contribution Given the broad range of disciplines represented at CWIX, the Defence Forces is aiming to concentrate its efforts on two Focus Areas that directly support operational effectiveness – Software Defined Radio Digital Waveform Interoperability and Federated Mission Networking. Software Defined Radio Digital Waveform Interoperability The Defence Forces is currently implementing a new generation of Thales SDR radios as part of its tactical communications modernisation programme. Participation in CWIX would allow Irish personnel to verify interoperability between IRISH SDR and partner nation radios. Testing against other military and NATO-approved industry platforms provides valuable technical assurance and delivers multinational interoperability building on national capability. Importantly, CWIX allows nations to identify and resolve any interoperability issues in a controlled environment before an operational deployment. Federated Mission Networking (FMN) The second focus area would be the participation in FMN assessment, verification and validation (AV&V). FMN provides the common standards and technical architecture that enable participating nations to securely share operational information during multinational missions. FMN establishes common standards that allow different national systems to connect and exchange information effectively as opposed to each nation using identical equipment. Developing Capability through Partnership CWIX differs from traditional exercises in that it places significant emphasis on collaboration and knowledge sharing. Network engineers, specialists and military communication experts work together to solve interoperability challenges that can affect multinational operations. For Ireland, this collaborative approach provides access to a network of experienced partners who have already developed similar capability. Opportunities to further develop this collaboration exist in the participation with partner nations and through smaller exercises such as a Nordic FMN exercise, assisting the Defence Forces build both the technical capability and personnel expertise required for future CWIX participation. Planning for the Future The Defence Forces continues to modernise its communications and information systems to meet the demands of an increasingly interconnected operational environment. Participation at CWIX provides an opportunity to demonstrate Irish technical capability, validate new communications systems and strengthen relationships with partner nations to ensure effective operational capability during multi-national co-operation. The 2026 Defence Forces observer delegation successfully identified priority capability areas, established valuable international contacts and confirmed the Defence Forces ability to contribute meaningfully to future interoperability activities. As the CIS Corps continues the rollout of new tactical communications systems and develops greater alignment with FMN standards, CWIX offers the platform to test, validate and improve these capabilities. By ensuring that Irish communications systems are able to achieve and maintain interoperability with those of partner nations, the CIS Corp will ensure the Defence Forces has the capability to contribute effectively to multinational operations, and remain a capable, interoperable and technologically prepared force for future missions.
