wwwwwwwwwwww An Cosantóir July / August 2026 www.military.ie/magazine T he Irish Defence Forces' Cavalry Corps is entering a new era of battlefield capability with the introduction of the RS6 remote weapons station 30mm x 113 chain gun. Designed to enhance reconnaissance, surveillance and direct fire support operations, the new system represents a significant leap forward in the firepower and effectiveness of Ireland's armoured reconnaissance forces. For decades, the Cavalry Corps has fulfilled a critical role as the Army's eyes and ears on the battlefield, answering the Brigade commander's critical information requirements (CCIR) and priority intelligence requirements (PIR) allowing them to make timely and accurate decisions. As one of the Defence Forces' primary manoeuvre elements, Cavalry units are tasked with reconnaissance both mounted and dismounted, information gathering, security operations and supporting infantry formations. The integration of the RS6 weapon system strengthens these core functions while providing a substantial increase in combat capability. At the heart of the system is the M230 LF 30mmx 113 chain gun, offering a muzzle velocity of 840m/s and a range of up to 3KM, firing at approx. 200 rds. per minute, with ammunition natures of TP and HEDP 16 | IRISH IRISH CAVALRY CAVALRY CORPS CORPS ENHANCES ENHANCES COMBAT COMBAT CAPABILITY CAPABILITY RS6 30MMX113 WEAPON SYSTEM RS6 30MMX113 WEAPON SYSTEM ARTICLE BY COMDT TOM TOOHER
