www.military.ie THE DEFENCE FORCES MAGAZINE | 11 operational output. The demands placed on the section are varied, and the team must be prepared to respond at short notice. One of our key capabilities is G40, The Man 8x8 Recovery vehicle (The Beast) is maintained at 30 minutes' Notice to Move (NTM). Its primary role is the recovery of Bn vehicles, ensuring that vehicle breakdowns or incidents do not unnecessarily affect operational activity. We also maintain G25 which is our SCANIA 6x6 truck with a water pod is another 10-minute NTM capability. G25 provides a fire prevention and response capability, using a water pod to support the Engineers in firefighting operations. This is an excellent example of the versatility required of military transport personnel. The same organisation that provides routine logistical support to the Bn can be required to provide an immediate operational response when circumstances change. The DROPs Capability Behind the day-to-day operation is a team of highly skilled drivers, supervised by Sgt Ronnie O'Connor. Our drivers are specialists in the operation of 8x8 DROPs trucks, a capability that is particularly important to sustain the Bn positions. These vehicles conduct essential tasks including resupply of the outposts and ration resupply runs for the Bn. While these tasks may appear routine, they are fundamental to the continued operation of personnel deployed throughout the Bn's area of responsibility. Operating heavy military vehicles in an overseas environment also requires a high degree of professionalism. Drivers must understand their vehicles, their equipment and the environment in which they operate. They are not simply vehicle operators; they are an important part of the Bn's logistical and operational capability. Keeping the Fleet Operational Our fitter team, under the supervision of Sgt Darragh Stafford, works to ensure that the Bn's vehicles remain serviceable and available for tasking. Their role is often conducted behind the scenes, but it is fundamental to the success of every movement and task undertaken by the Bn. Sgt Stafford is also Advance Recovery qualified and operates the MAN 8x8 Recovery vehicle, commonly known within the team as "The Beast." Its capabilities have been put to good use during this deployment, including the recovery of MOWAGs and the lifting and movement of containers in support of the ongoing withdrawal process of IRISHPOLBATT. These tasks demonstrate the breadth of capability contained within a relatively small Tpt team. From vehicle recovery and heavy lifting to fire response and routine resupply, there is rarely a typical day. A Career in Transport One of the things that continues to stand out to me about Tpt is the variety of opportunities it offers. It combines driving, vehicle maintenance, logistics, leadership and specialist qualifications, while also providing personnel with the opportunity to work in challenging environments both at home and overseas. For anyone considering a career in the Defence Forces, Tpt offers an opportunity to develop skills that are both professionally rewarding and operationally important. Personnel can specialise in areas such as heavy vehicle driving, vehicle maintenance, recovery and logistics while also developing the leadership and teamwork skills expected throughout the Defence Forces.
