| 27 Increasingly more and more Defence Forces exercises are integrated between the Army, Air Corps and Naval Service. Life onboard a ship or a plane can be totally alien to a soldier used to having his feet on the ground. Onboard a Naval vessel you will regularly hear what are known as Pipes over the ships intercom. Here are some of the routine pipes you may hear. Pipes are preceded by a blast from the bosun/seaman's whistle. All pipes are repeated twice after a short pause. Anchoring: Harbour Stations: Boarding Stations: Cruising Stations: Prep for Heli- Operations: At Heli-Ops: Man Aloft: Divers Down: Refuelling: Shore Leave: Call the Hands: Clear away / weigh anchors x2, cable party & special sea duty men close up, assume damage control state 3 condition yankee. Rig for cable party... Harbour stations x2, fore & after party and special sea duty men close up, assume damage control state 3 condition yankee. Rig for fore & after parties... Boarding stations x2, delta crew & special sea duty men close up, assume damage control state 3 condition yankee. Cruising stations x2, revert to damage control state 3 condition x-ray. Prepare for Heli-Ops. Flight deck/aft deck out of bounds to personnel not involved. No smoking or ditching of gash on the upper decks. Fire-fighting party close up on the port/star board waist. Special sea duty men close up assume damage control state 3 condition yankee. Ship at Heli-Ops stations x2 (DC may be heightened by MEO). Man aloft x2, all ships company to obey ship's radhaz (radiation hazard) warnings in all ships compartments. Divers down x2, all ships company to obey ship's radhaz in all ships compartments. No machinery to be started without the express permission of the officer of the day (OOD/MEO), no gash to be ditched. Ship refuelling x2, strictly no smoking onboard while ship is being refuelled, all ships company to obey ship's radhaz in all ships compartments. Desig nated smoking area is... (repeat pipe every 15 minutes) Shore leave has been granted to the off duty watches from… hrs until… hrs. Shore leave is confined to the precincts of the port.
