n 10th December 2013, a Cavalry Corps day and night shoot took place in the Glen
of Imaal, Co Wicklow, at which the Corps' fleet of Scorpion CVR(T) and Mowag
Piranha III vehicles were put through their paces.
The Cavalry is one of the corps that provides the 'teeth' of the Defence Forces and has a
long and proud tradition of service. Originally, it was called the Armoured Car Corps and was
armed with a fleet of light armoured vehicles. Over the decades, the fleet has evolved from:
Landsverk armoured cars, Comet and Churchill MBTs (1950s), Panhard AMLs (1960s), Scorpion
CVR(T)s (1980) to the latest AFV investment in two variant of the Mowag Piranha III, the Close
Reconnaissance Vehicle (CRV) and Medium Reconnaissance Vehicle (MRV), both entering
service in 2008.
