The camp was centred around the Single Force Concept with the reserve D & E Troops actively training alongside their PDF colleagues for a sustained period of time. Troopers were able to complete SERE levels A & B, fitness testing, manual handling certification, navigation and driver/fitter training. Also included in the busy schedule was a familiarisation tour of Fort Davis and individual weapons practices on both the open range and Electric Target Range in Kilworth. GEOViEwER J 6 has developed a map viewer called GeoViewer which is now available on IKON for all DF personnel to use. GeoViewer is the first strand in the DF GIS Strategy and will allow all DF personnel to access up to date mapping of Ireland for training or operational purposes. The GeoViewer also provides an ability to draw, measure and write text on the map. This will allow people preparing for train- ing exercises or operations to prepare and print their own maps, up to A3 size, with basic map marking symbols. The GeoViewer will serve large and medium scale mapping to the Defence Forces from a scale of 1:600,000 to a scale of 1:1,000. The datasets will also include the 1:50,000 scale that is most commonly used at all levels, as well as containing orthophoto's (aerial imagery) of the country. Further tools and geographic information will be added further into the beta stage of the project. New Ballistic computer T he DF have received a number of Kestrel 4500's which enhance the capabilities of sniper teams by improving accuracy and extending range. The Kestrel is a pocket weather meter that has the usual features of temperature, air pressure and wind speed, among others. However the key advantage for DF snipers is that it is also an applied ballistics computer that can be viewed via it's night vision friendly backlight. Each meter is installed with software that can calculate the adjustments necessary for an accurate fall of shot. These adjustments can be tailored to indi- vidual rifles, ensuring even greater accuracy for the snipers. The Kestrel will be distributed to units across the country. Third DF Independent Monitoring Group Report T he Third DF Independent Monitoring Group (IMG) Report was launched in McKee Bks on 03 September by Minister for Defence Simon Co- veney TD, COS Lieutenant General Conor O'Boyle and the IMG Chairwoman, Dr Eileen Doyle (pictured). The Report provides a comprehensive review of the progress made by the DF since the initial publication of the 'Response to the Challenge of a Workplace' in 2004 and the Second IMG Report of 2008. Minister for Defence, Simon Coveney, had this to say about the efforts of the IMG, "This Report confirms that the culture of the Defence Forces continues to evolve positively. However, the fact that IMG continues to question whether best practice polices are being uniformly implemented across the Defence Forces is a concern." The Minister also confirmed that he "fully accepted and would work tirelessly to ensure the imple- mentation of the 35 recommendations made in the Report." The Third IMG Report can be viewed at www.defence.ie
