visit us at www.military.ie DEFENCE FORCES PART 1 - BODY MASS INDEX CALCULATIONS WHAT IS BMI? - Body Mass Index (BMI), (Weight/Height2) is a measurement used in large population studies as an index of obesity due to ease of calculation and inexpensive and non-invasive nature. Please note the following in relation to the BMI readings: <20 - May be associated with health problems for some people. It may be a good idea to consult your doctor for advice. 20 - 25 - Good health for most people. This is the range you want to stay in. 25 – 29.9 - Indicates overweight and may be associated with health problems for some people. Use the diet tips to get below 25. ≥30 - NO GO FOR REMAINDER OF SCREENING TEST Indicates obesity and is associated with increased risk of health problems such as heart disease, high blood pressure and diabetes. Note: The BMI should not be used by the following; (1). Young adults under 20 years. (2). Adults over 60 years. (3). Pregnant women. (4). Muscular individuals (must take % body fat test). PERCENTAGE BODY FAT The BPEO will assess % body fat of individuals who score thirty (30) points or over on the BMI. If the skin fold thickness exceeds 70mm for males or 80mm for females, the individual is not eligible for the remainder of the test. PART 2 One-minute press-ups and sit-ups are measures of Muscular Strength and endurance and identify the components of fi tness.
