It was awarded in recognition of his exceptional bravery, which resulted in his death at Niemba, Republic of the Congo on the 8th November 1960. His citation reads: "He endeavoured to create an opportunity to allow an in- jured comrade to escape by firing his Gustaf thereby drawing attention to his own position, which he must have been aware, would endanger his life.
