visit us at www.military.ie Javelin T Lebanon Report T he DF has embarked on an upgrade programme for the Javelin. The Basic Skills Trainer (BST) is being replaced by the Enhanced Producibiltiy BST. The EPBST allows the instructor to design exercises to test the gunner; anything from an IED to a market place scenario whereby the gunner has to make split second decisions on whether to engage a target or otherwise. The new features include civilians, armed insurgents in civilian attire, scooters, cars and a number of landscapes. The significant upgrade is that the system allows the instructor to design paths that allow characters to travel anywhere on the screen. This enables the instructor to tailor exercises to mission specific theatres and constantly challenge the detachment. Tests will be designed by IWW staff on the new EPBST to determine the winner of the upcoming Anti Armour Concentration in August. he troops of 107 IRISHFINN BATT are commanded by Lt Col David Dignam are now around four months into their tour. The Bn strength is over 320 with 176 Finnish also serving. With an average of four trips per person, this makes the 107th one of the most experienced units from the 30 plus troop contributing nations in UNIFIL. Sectors West and East are how the UNIFIL AO is broken down. The Irish AO, which is in Sector West, is around 17km by 8km. We have three posts and mobile patrols, taken from the two APC coys (one Finn/one Irish) and one recce coy, to cover this. The Bn and the Lebanese have further intensified their co-operation by carrying out combined activities on a daily basis including day and night patrols through the AO and the Blue Line; checkpoints and recovering and destroying ordnance left from previous conflicts. The threat level at the moment is medium, but the region is volatile and incidents can escalate very quickly. The attached pictures show a UNIFIL Force medevac exercise in Irish Post 2-45 where our medics assisted and evacuated mock casualties and one of the many joint Irish-Finn patrols.
