29 HANDOVER CEREMONY CUSTUME BARRACKS property but was donated to the Church in 1932. On conclusion of the salute, the Marching Body returned to Custume Barracks and concluded the parade. The events in Athlone Castle were concluded with the VIP visitors being treated to a very stirring re-enactment of a speech, given on the day in 1922 by General Mac Eoin, by local actor John McGlynn. The closing lines of the speech were particularly memorable and serve as a striking reminder of the significant and important role of the Defence Forces. "Therefore, Athlone today for Ireland and for the Midlands, from this day forward shall… be a guarantee to the people of Ireland of their freedom, a guarantee to enable them to live in peace, prosperity and progress". The commemoration attracted a significant crowd with the area around the Bridge and Athlone Castle being filled close to capacity. The local support added significantly to the event. The event was also filmed, and highlights were shared on Defence Forces, Athlone Castle and Westmeath County Council social media channels. In addition, The Old Athlone Society marked the centenary with an evening of lectures in the Sheraton Hotel, where Society President Ian Kenneally and Dr John Gibney spoke about the events of 1921 and 1922. Again, this was a very well supported event. Overall, the centenary commemoration in Athlone was a community event. While the Defence Forces were front and centre, the support of the community and the various groups and organisations greatly enhanced the commemoration and made it a fitting tribute and a most memorable day for all those involved.
