Noon: Pearse and Connolly with 150 Insurgents seize the GPO (2), establishing their headquarters there. Pearse reads the Proclamation from the steps of the GPO. Insur- gents seize and barricade build- ings at the corners at North Earl Street, Henry Street, and Lower and Middle Abbey Street. Throughout the day, Insurgents seize buildings and barricade streets in the city including: The Four Courts (3), the Mendicity In- stitute (4), Jacobs Factory (5) Davy's Pub (6), Boland's Bakery (7), Mount Street Bridge (8), South Dublin Union (9), College of Surgeons (10), St. Stephen's Green (11), City Hall (12), Westland Row Station (13), Harcourt Street Station (14) and Broadstone Station (15). Fighting breaks out in Dolphin's Barn and Portobello Bridge/Davy's Pub (6). Insurgents positioned in 25 Northumberland Road (16) engage a party of the GR Veterans Corps during which fi ve members of the Corps are killed. Magazine Fort (17) attacked and an attempt made to set it on fi re. Insurgents try unsuccessfully to take Amiens Street Station (18), Kingsbridge Station (19) and Dublin Castle/City Hall (12). Afternoon: A British cavalry troop rides down Sackville Street (O'Connell Street) and incurs several casualties when fi red on by insurgents from the GPO. Evening: Insurgent positions established throughout the city, including the Four Courts (3), St Stephen's Green (11), the South Dublin Union (9)(now St James' Hospital), Boland's Bakery, Jacobs and Mount Street Bridge. Tuesday April 25th Dawn: British reinforcements from The Curragh, Belfast and England begin to arrive in Dublin. An artil- lery battery arrives from Athlone. British troops occupy the Shel- bourne Hotel (28), overlooking St Stephen's Green (11). At fi rst light rifl e and machine gun fi re from the hotel forces Comdt Mallin to retire to the College of Surgeons (10). British establish a line of posts from Kingsbridge Station (19) to Trinity College and from Parkgate to the North Wall and destroy insurgent barricades at the Cabra Road (20) and Phibsboro (21). Insurgent positions in Fairview (22) are evacuated. Heavy fi ght- ing, including a British bayonet charge, takes place around Dublin Castle on Cork Hill and Parliament Street. British forces retake City Hall (12). Martial Law is proclaimed in Dublin. 1916
