Magazine Fort Amiens Street Station Kingsbridge Station Cabra Road Phibsboro Fairview Kelly's Fort The Metropole Hotel Moore Street Parochial Hall School House Shelbourne Hotel 14 27 Wednesday April 26th Morning: British Gunship Helga, moored at the Customs House begins to shell Liberty Hall (1) and Boland's Bakery (7). British reinforcements from England arrive in large numbers. Heavy fi ghting continues throughout the city. British use fi eld artillery against the GPO (2) and Kelly's Fort (23). Kelly's Fort is evacuated and insurgents take up positions in the Metropole Hotel (24). Afternoon: British capture the Men- dicity Institute (4). Insurgents infl ict the heaviest casualties of the week's fi ghting on the Sherwood Foresters at Mount Street Bridge (8). Evening: British eventually seize control of the bridge. Martial law is proclaimed in Ireland. Thursday April 27th Morning: Fighting continues through- out the city as British forces tighten their cordon around the GPO (2) and the Four Courts (3), with intensive artillery bombardment. Heavy fi ghting continues at the South Dublin Union (9). Fires start in Sackville Street. James Connolly is wounded while supervising the construction of a barricade. Friday April 28th Morning: With the GPO (2) under constant attack, on fi re and badly damaged, the Insurgents evacuate the building. Pearse and Connolly, the lat- ter on a stretcher, are among the last to leave and move to a grocer's shop in Moore Street. The Metropole Hotel (24) is also evacuated with the Insurgents establishing a new headquarters in a grocer's shop in Moore Street (25). Afternoon: General Maxwell arrives in Dublin and takes command of the Brit- ish forces, he promises tough action against the Insurgents. Heavy fi ghting continues throughout the day, particu- larly in North King Street. Saturday April 29th Morning: Heavy civilian casualties in North King Street. The Insurgent lead- ership agree the situation is hopeless and decide to seek terms. 1245hrs: Nurse Elizabeth O'Farrell meets General Lowe under a fl ag of truce. 1430hrs: Pearse, accompanied by Nurse O'Farrell, meets General Lowe in Henry Street and surrenders unconditionally. The Insurgents in the Four Courts (3) surrender. 1600hrs: A ceasefi re is declared and the fi rst batch of 480 prisoners is shipped to England. Sunday April 30th Insurgent units at the South Dublin Union (9), College of Surgeons (10), Jacobs Factory (5) and Boland's Bakery (7) surrender. Deportation of prisoners continues. 2016
